Trends in plagiarism and text-matching detection software

Scholarly publishers have widely adopted text-matching detection software, but this led to some concerning developments. Some authors have a tendency to rewrite their texts that do contain plagiarism until popular software does not raise an alarm. Or they use techniques of disguising plagiarism that are not discoverable by current systems.

In this talk, Debora Weber-Wulff, a leading plagiarism researcher who has been working with the VroniPlag Wiki plagiarism documentation group since 2011 and testing test-matching software since 2004, will give an overview of a plagiarism typology. The results of the most recent test of text-matching software systems will be presented and the challenges with the use of such systems will be discussed. There will be ample time for questions and discussion after the talk.

This free webinar is the first of a series organized by STM around the topic of research integrity, featuring trends, technological developments, and specialists in the field.
