Diversity and Inclusion

Seminar Director: Phill Jones, Chief Technology Officer, Emerald Group Publishing

Recently, an overdue conversation has begun on the topic of Diversity and Inclusion. From the #metoo and #timesup movements to Sohia Noble’s excellent keynote at SSP, a series of powerful posts on the Scholarly Kitchen, and the many panels and talks at STM, ALPSP, CSE and other industry events that pack the rooms out. There is clearly a strong need to explore how we, as both an industry and society can do much better to make everybody feel welcome. Come and learn how you can move your organization forward on this vital topic!

Diversity and Inclusion is important. We have a moral imperative to be fair and kind to all members of society. It’s also good business. Attracting and keeping the best talent is imperative in today’s competitive environment. That is impossible if certain demographics feel unwelcome. Diverse organisations also make better decisions because they draw on a broader base of experience and perspectives. By embracing multiple viewpoints, leaders get a more holistic view of their environment and consequently, have more options.

In this seminar, we will explore the concepts of diversity, inclusion, fairness, and resilience from a range of perspectives. What pro-active steps can your organization take to attract and retain the best talent? How do we foster a healthy work environment where people feel free to be themselves? How do we eliminate bias in our hiring and promotion practices?
