Advanced course in journal publishing – Asia 2020

Who should attend?

The course is designed for individuals with a few years of experience within scholarly publishing and, is primarily focused on journals. To gain the most benefit from the course, participants will need to have at least 1-3  years’ publishing experience as junior or middle managers but others with more experience will also find this course to be a useful refresher and an inspiration for their future career. Their experience may be in editorial, sales, marketing or content management roles, but the course is also valuable for people working in other roles such as finance, web publishing and technology, or customer service.

Scope of the course

Experienced practitioners provide intensive training across all of the publishing operations and roles in STM, social science and humanities.

The course consists of three distinct elements:

  1. Independent one-hour lectures on topics important to the publishing of scientific journals.
  2. Success in the role of a scientific publisher depends, for a substantial part, on who you are and how you apply your personality when interacting with others. Therefore, the course will spend time on this, using models and tools like Berlitz’ Cultural Navigator and look into the learning's of the Meyer Briggs Type Indicators (MBTI).
  3. As in previous years of this successful training event the course uses the case study method -- involving the students in competitive business problem solving. The case study also enables the students to share their existing experience and insight, incorporating newly learned skills and thinking. The intense preparatory team-work, resulting in a society-pitch has become a ‘rite of passage’ for participants.

Organisation of the course

An outline of the topics covered and the speakers invited is provided below. The presentations have been devised to encourage interaction and the programme is more flexible that it looks in order to allow for more detailed discussions of what emerge as key areas of interest and concern. It is anticipated that all “spare” time will generally be devoted to the case study. It will therefore be necessary to stay the 3 nights of 28th February, 1st and 2nd March 2021 at the hotel even if you work and live in Singapore. All participants should strongly consider bringing their laptops. All participants will take part in their teams oral and written presentations but it will be understood that for some of those attending English is not the first language.
