Transformation of the scholarly publishing system is happening on many fronts — including how we deal with research data, which is key to Open Research and the Open Science movement. Regardless of the field of study, research data is one of the most fundamental aspects of maintaining research integrity, which is why the 6th Japan Basic Plan for Science, Technology, and Innovation aims to realize strategic data management and utilization, and why STM launched in 2020 an initiative to help publishers make their research data FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). For JST research data is one key strategic focus for 2022.
In this upcoming seminar, the 5th joint JST / STM event supported by the STM Japan Chapter, we will focus on the advantages of making research data FAIR while also discussing FAIR data in the context of increasing funder requirements for data management plans, and the various ways authors benefit from making their data FAIR.
Sharing FAIR research data is not only a good research practice and a way to ensure scientific integrity, it also provides a pathway for new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to access data, opening up new discoveries in science and research. Funders and publishers alike play an important role in making research data more FAIR. Published articles are essential hubs for the sharing, linking, and citing of research data and other research outputs. Making research data FAIR enriches the published content, making even more research data findable and accessible within the scholarly ecosystem. JST provides with J-STAGE an infrastructure supporting researchers to deposit their research data.
