Role Summary

The impact you will make:

  • The Scientific Editor ensures that the primary research and review content of Reports on Progress in Physics represents a broad cross-section of the most significant scientific breakthroughs across the physical sciences; thus, building an international journal brand synonymous with high-prestige and high-impact.
  • The Scientific Editor ensures that authors receive world-class pre- and post-publication service and support, and that as many submissions as possible are published somewhere within the IOPP portfolio of journals.
  • The Scientific Editor connects directly to the research community—be they authors, reviewers, or editors— both in person and online to build trust, connections and an understanding of the latest scientific developments and the communities’ publishing needs. This knowledge supports colleagues and influences decision-making across IOPP.

What you will be doing:

Commission & curate content

  • Curate high impact papers, and help oversee their peer review.
  • Commission Review articles from world-leading researchers across the world.

Build a journal and a personal brand

  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions to develop a deep understanding of current and upcoming scientific trends.
  • Speak confidently on the mission of making Reports on Progress in Physics a high selectivity and high impact journal.

Provide world-leading post-publication support

  • Collaborate with the press, media and Physics World teams to ensure our authors and their work receive the deserved visibility and recognition.
  • Write highlight-style articles to translate the complex ideas and concepts from our research papers.

Liaise with external Editorial Board

  • Build strong relationships with the Editorial Board, provide them ongoing support and guidance.
  • Identify and recruit new members to the Editorial Board.

Experience required to set you up for success:

  • A PhD in a relevant physical science. Post-doctoral experience preferred but not essential.
  • Subject expertise, ideally with proven research expertise and existing networks within a relevant STEM discipline and a passion for science.
  • Knowledge of the research landscape including an understanding of researchers’ needs and expectations around academic journal publishing (from the perspective of authors, readers, editors and reviewers).
  • Knowledge of the STM publishing landscape. and understanding of ethics and integrity in peer review. An awareness of open access, including current trends and mandates, would be beneficial but not essential.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to engage, influence and develop strong networks and long-term professional relationships with researchers.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, and the ability to provide internal and external advocacy for IOPP’s targeted subject development.
  • Clear written communication and aptitude for editing text and simplifying complex ideas and concepts
  • A creative mindset and the ability to bring energy, ideas and new approaches.
  • Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills; the ability to directly interpret data; deliver new strategic insights; able to report key summaries and recommendations
  • Highly self-motivated, resourceful, achievement oriented, with excellent organisational skills, and robust to change and uncertainty
  • Adaptability and flexibility - willing and able to travel domestically and internationally
  • A proven ability to meet deadlines and to work effectively under pressure; ability to prioritise effectively and combine attention to detail with maintaining an eye on the bigger picture.
