AnaMaria Ion-Kary

After working in an academic library providing access services and supervising student workers for four years, AnaMaria pivoted to publishing. Since this move, she’s been working at De Gruyter, within their Publisher Partner Program. When AnaMaria started at De Gruyter in 2017, the Publisher Partner team only had one full-time member on the team; the Program has since grown to nine full-time employees, with a portfolio of over 35 presses. AnaMaria is responsible for supporting the integration, availability, and discoverability of these University Presses’ large portfolios, while also providing sales support to the North American library market.

In addition to AnaMaria’s work with these distribution services, she is also passionate about topics concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion in the publishing industry. At De Gruyter, AnaMaria helped bring to life an internal DEI committee, known as IDEAL (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism Lived). This volunteer committee includes members from both the home office in Germany as well as colleagues within the US, and members are always looking for ways to engage other regions, and underrepresented groups, as well. She served as Co-Chair of IDEAL for three years. Most recently, AnaMaria joined STM’s Social Responsibility’s Committee Task & Finish Group focused on EDI and is looking forward to collaborating with and learning from other members within the industry.
