We are currently looking a Portfolio Development Specialist, Journals to join us on a permanent basis. This role will support the journal Publishers in the development and implementation of projects to increase article growth and retention to enable and sustain the RSC’s transition to 100% open access (OA). You will work across multiple teams within our journal department, collaborating with colleagues to support, coordinate and be responsible for specific operational programmes of work to maximise open access commissioning.

Although this role is contractually based at our Cambridge office, you will be able to work from home within the UK, with the expectation that you will attend the office as needed for your role.

Your responsibilities will focus on:

  • Supporting the journal Publishers in the development, coordination and implementation of projects that underpin, advance and sustain portfolio transition to 100% OA
  • To monitor and support the reporting of commissioning and transfer activities against targets under the article growth and retention programme.
  • To work on, and sometimes lead, projects and activities that support and optimise effective commissioning to facilitate portfolio transition to 100% OA.
  • To coordinate with journal teams on commissioning and with the Transfers project team, focussing on strategic and tactical activities to increase article acquisition and retention towards a successful OA transition for the portfolio.
  • In consultation with the Publishers and Executive Editors, to work with the Marketing team to develop and implement author marketing activities that support OA transition through article growth and retention.
  • To collaborate with colleagues in the identification and development of new business opportunities and scientific areas related to open access commissioning and article retention
  • To prepare proposals and write reports, performing data analysis as required, to make recommendations and provide insights on article growth and retention opportunities towards 100% OA transition.
  • To ensure the alignment of our article commissioning and retention activities with RSC policy and best practice on equality, inclusion and diversity, in coordination with the Journal Manager, Peer Review and Ethics.

What we are looking for:

  • A degree in science (chemical science normally preferred) or relevant STM publishing experience
  • Extensive experience in commissioning and coordinating commissioning activities
  • Good knowledge and experience of peer review and the publishing processes
  • Strong analytical, organisational, communication and prioritisation skills
  • Experience of programme and project management, including experience working and coordinating across multiple projects and implementations at the same time
  • Demonstrates a sound understanding of our customers and their requirements
