Dean Smith

Dean Smith’s career in publishing spans 28 years and includes experience in scholarly, STM, trade and association-based publishing in a variety of roles. In his role as Director of Project MUSE since 2010, Smith has brought a wealth of industry experience in leading digital publishing initiatives, global sales and marketing expertise, and strategic planning skills to the growth of the University Press Content Consortia--a 100 publisher e-book initiative that now features 21,000 eBooks fully integrated with the 570 scholarly journals currently on MUSE.  As Director of Content for the American Society for Training and Development, he created a digital publishing strategy for the society's periodical, book, and research publications. During a decade-plus tenure with the American Chemical Society journals publishing program beginning in late 1997, Smith oversaw dynamic growth in worldwide electronic access to the society's publications, designing innovative pricing models, emphasizing library customer relations, and implementing effective internal management systems. He previously spearheaded electronic publishing efforts for a variety of medical publication products at Chapman & Hall, and led traditional journal publishing programs at C&H and Springer-Verlag. An accomplished writer and published poet, he holds a BA from the University of Virginia, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University.
