Dr James Milne is a publishing professional with almost 25 years’ experience in Scientific, Technical and Medical publishing. He is currently Senior Vice President for the American Chemical Society’s Journal Publishing Group.
After completing his PhD in computational structural engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, he joined Pergamon/Elsevier as a publishing editor responsible for a portfolio of engineering books and journals. After seventeen years with Elsevier, he joined the Royal Society of Chemistry to lead the development of their journal, book and magazine publishing portfolios, initially as Editorial Director and latterly as Managing Director. Over four years, he grew their publishing output significantly whilst improving quality metrics, introduced the innovative Gold for Gold open access initiative, and launched RSC Advances, now the industry’s second largest journal after PLOS1. In 2013 he joined Wiley as Global Publishing Director for their physical science journal portfolio, a programme that included many of their most cited and downloaded titles.
Earlier this year, Dr Milne accepted a position with the American Chemical Society becoming their Senior Vice President for the Journal Publishing Group. His vision is to develop ACS products and services to place the organization at the forefront of the information profession, while truly satisfying the information needs of the global research community. In this context, he identifies and supports the goals of the International Association of STM Publishing, to advance our industry for the good of science and scholarly research.
He is the Chair of the STM Education & Training Committee, and has been involved in organising committees for STM events since 2001. He has previously sat on the Council of ALPSP, and the Board for CCDC.
