Position: International features editor, BMJ

Contract: 12 months FTC

Salary: £59,355

Start date: ASAP

 

The BMJ is seeking an accomplished journalist to join its features team for 12 months. Reporting to the Head of News and Views, the editor will be responsible for commissioning, editing and writing features. Features are a crucial part of the journal which provide readers with topical, compelling and informative content. 

 

Responsibilities

The core focus of the role is developing and commissioning stories for our large international audience of practising clinicians on bmj.com, our popular‘Head to Head’ debate articles and essays from leading names in healthcare. The editor might be covering topics related to federal health policy in the US, smoking in China, new models of care in the Netherlands, and drug shortages worldwide.

Qualifications

The successful candidate is likely to be a graduate with a recognised journalism qualification (NCTJ-approved) or equivalent, extensive experience as a section editor on a health and science-related weekly or a daily publication, a detailed up to date knowledge of important issues and controversies in medicine, and good contacts both among potential writers and prominent figures in health care. You will have a strong track record in spotting big issues and know how to turn them into authoritative and engaging copy against tight deadlines and within budget. You’ll appreciate the use of metrics to inform commissioning to increase web traffic to the features section. Good negotiating skills and experience of seeing difficult projects through to completion are essential.

This is a full-time role, working at our central London offices but with some flexibility to work from home.
