Web browsers, privacy, and your publishing platform webinar
Moderated by: Heather Flanagan, Program Director for SeamlessAccess
With user privacy on the web becoming a major concern to browser vendors like Google (Chrome), Apple (Safari), and Mozilla (Firefox), important changes on how browsers store and use information about their users are currently being developed and implemented. Apple has already implemented several privacy-preserving features, and Mozilla and Google are not far behind. While these changes will definitely improve the privacy landscape and protect users from hidden user tracking, these changes also have implications for federated authentication on the web – which is an important mechanism for many researchers to access scholarly resources online. The functionality that supports hidden tracking is the same functionality that supports federated authentication.
As browser vendors are becoming aware of these issues, several proposals are being explored as potential ways to preserve federated single sign-on while preventing hidden tracking. Still, for right now, they are all just proposals that need further development and elaboration – and that require input and participation from the research and scholarly communications community.
Join us for this interactive webinar by Heather Flanagan to learn more about these issues, how they impact your organization, and how you can join the conversation.
