Publishing in a changing world

How are STM publishers meeting the opportunities and challenges presented by a rapidly changing publishing landscape?

This year’s STM Annual Conference will explore how the industry can adapt to continue to improve the quality, integrity, and availability of scholarly communications whilst dealing with the important technological challenges that underpin research integrity, user privacy, and cybersecurity.

Attracting the leading figures from across scholarly and professional publishing, STM’s Annual Conference provides a program focused on strategic thinking, public policy, business models, and the key drivers that will shape the future of the STM industry.

Discussion panel:
Forward together: perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of advancing Open Research
Moderated by: Tasha Mellins-Cohen, Founder & Director, Mellins-Cohen Consulting

Open Science, Open Research, and Open Access are fundamental to the daily environment of all involved in scholarly communications. STM publishers sit at the interface between researchers, their research, and the rest of the world through their efforts to improve the quality and availability of scholarly communication – as such, they’re deeply immersed in advancing openness and are aware of many of the opportunities and challenges. But do they understand how other stakeholders perceive the most pressing and salient issues?

Our panellists will present a variety of perspectives and first-hand experiences to provide attendees with insights into the broader scholarly communications ecosystem.

A discussion will follow which will seek to examine how different groups of stakeholders are preparing to adapt and to thrive against a backdrop of both new opportunities and new challenges

Technology, Trust, Together:
Common challenges and opportunities for today’s digital scholarly communication ecosystem

Moderated by: Hylke Koers, CIO STM Solutions

Digital technology is pervasive in how research is conducted, how research teams collaborate, and how research output is disseminated. This has brought many improvements and new opportunities, for example enabling more efficient ways of (remote) working and giving researchers the ability to discover and access a world of scholarly literature at their fingertips. At the same time, there are still some important technological challenges and pain points in areas such as access, research integrity, user privacy, and cybersecurity – and a lot remains to be done.

Through a combination of brief presentations, audience input, and moderated discussion, this session will explore challenges and opportunities for digital technology to strengthen and support scholarly communications. We will focus specifically on common issues and pain points, for which working together within and between stakeholder groups can truly make the difference.
