Salvatore Mele holds a PhD in High-Energy Physics and is head of Open Access at CERN, where he serves as Strategic Director for INSPIRE (inspirehep.net): a complete digital library for he worldwide high-energy physics community. Dr. Mele also acts as the interim project manager for the SCOAP3 initiative, which aims to convert to Open Access the entire literature of High-Energy Physics, and coordinates the multi-stakeholder SOAP and ODE projects, financed by the European Commission to study opportunities in Open Access publishing and Open Data, respectively. He has recently expanded his interests to opportunities, policies and governance for data preservation, re-use and sharing with the PARSE.Insight, APARSEN and DPHEP groups. Previous to his last appointment, he had a fifteen years carriers in physics, leading scientific teams which measured fundamental physics constants, hunted for the Higgs boson and searched for extra dimensions at the CERN LEP accelerator.
