James Milne is the Managing Director for Publishing at the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
He started his publishing career at Pergamon/Elsevier in 1992, holding a variety of editorial and business development positions before joining the RSC as Editorial Director in 2009. Since February 2011 he has led the successful development of the RSC’s significant portfolio of books, journals, databases and magazines.
During this time the RSC has launched a dozen new journals, including the award winning Chemical Science, and the innovative journal RSC Advances, which moved to a weekly frequency within its first year. Overall, the portfolio of publications has grown in impact while also increasing almost threefold in scale. The international profile of the content and of the organization has also developed significantly, with RSC offices now in USA, China, Japan, India and Brazil.
As MD for RSC Publishing, he has a vision to develop the portfolio to place the RSC at the forefront of the information profession, while truly satisfying the information needs of the international chemical science community. A recent example is the launch of ‘Gold for Gold’, an innovative approach to engage with the chemical science community, at a time when funding to support Gold OA has yet to be clearly defined.
He is a member of the STM Education & Training Committee, has been on the organising committee for the STM MasterClass since 2001, and has presented at several STM events. He also sits on the Council of ALPSP, and the Board for CCDC.
