Alicia Wise is Director of Universal Access for Elsevier. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and worked as an academic archaeologist. Next she joined the UK Joint Information Systems Committee to manage national negotiations for access to a broad array of intellectual property and then to direct innovation programs to stimulate the creative use of information technology in universities and colleges. Alicia then moved to the publishing industry as Chief Executive of the Publishers Licensing Society which is a not-for-profit owned by publishing trade bodies to oversee collective licensing arrangements for UK publishers. From that position she was also seconded to serve as Head of Digital Publishing at The Publishers Association (PA). In her role at Elsevier she is responsible for access strategy and policies, and for building relationships with other stakeholders in the scholarly communication landscape who share an interest in broadening access.
