About the role:
As Publisher, you will be responsible for the strategic development and management of the content and scope of the journals Nanotechnology, Nano Futures and Translational Materials Research. With annual KPIs for growth and performance, you’ll establish and communicate the commercial and editorial strategy and direction, and set up processes and plans to operationalize strategies to develop IOP’s materials science coverage within nanoscience.
Working proactively and collaboratively across the organization and with colleagues from the wider industry, you’ll keep up to date on the latest developments in the STM publishing environment. You will focus on generating ideas, creating new business, and identifying opportunities to increase market share, providing insightful information to support this. Managing and servicing partner relationships and proactively seeking and engaging with potential new partners will be key to the success of the role.
The successful candidate will be a publishing professional with the enthusiasm, drive and interpersonal skills needed to deliver sustained portfolio growth and development. Commercially aware, you will understand what it takes to make journals profitable and have the interpersonal skills to take a proactive approach in developing our offering to be the first choice for authors and readers. Communication and organisational skills backed by experience are essential, as is a good understanding of the scientist’s expectations for a research journal.

Applicants should demonstrate:
- Educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally in a scientifically related field
- Previous experience in scientific, technical and medical (STM) publishing
- Understanding of the priorities and expectations of an academic research journal
- Business acumen with the ability to grasp publishing finance including P&L, and develop business plans for new journals growth
- Exceptional communication, networking and society partnership skills and experience, with the ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
- Proven commissioning skills and results
- Willingness to travel to meetings and conferences worldwide
