STM Committees

The task of the STM Committees can be summarized as follows:

• To establish, together with the STM Secretariat, a pro-active agenda and continue or open dialogues with international (non) governmental institutions and bodies engaged in technology and higher education;

• To provide a platform to the membership for practical assistance;

• To organize information sharing seminars and training courses;

• To generally increase professional excellence and cooperation in the international STM publishing environment.

It benefits members to participate, whenever possible, in these committees.

Brief
To pursue, within the limits of the STM Association's aims and objectives, the highest possible level of international protection of copyright works and of the publishers performance in making these available in whichever form or manner;

To advise on the legal consequences of various approaches to rights acquisition and management (e.g. enforcement);

To enhance and improve, in whichever way, awareness and knowledge of copyright and related rights, in particular on the international level, among publishers as well as all other members of the information transfer community insofar as these are unaware of the special implications of copyright and related rights for publishers;

To prevent and fight piracy and all other unauthorized uses of protected publishers products world-wide, wherever possible in conjunction with other relevant organizations.

Recognizing that STM needs a regular active group monitoring copyright enforcement priorities, principally in the area of unauthorized document delivery services, the Legal Affairs & Copyright Committee formed a task force within the Committee, which meets on a regular basis to discuss th overall program, investigation results, and strategies and tactics with respect to negotiations and discussions.

This is a high level brainstorming group on 'Technology Trends.' Working on behalf of the membership, the remit of the Committee includes the monitoring of new technology trends and their impact on the STM publishing industry. The Committee will alert the Board to key developments and trends in the area of standards and technology and will propose joint STM strategies wherever useful or ncessary. It will also act as the Program Committee for the annual Innovations Seminar in London in December.

The committee’s charter is to discuss government relations, strategy, and policy communications issues and provide advice and recommendations on these matters as appropriate to the STM Board and/or Chief Executive Officer. The Committee is in the process of reviewing ways in which it might help define the message we want to send to key stakeholders about the publishing industry and its role in access, dissemination, and preservation of scholarly information worldwide.
