patientINFORM
patient INFORM is a free online service that provides patients and their carers with access to some of the most up-to-date, reliable, and important research available about the diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases. In patientINFORM, consumers have the ability to not only read the latest research, but also to find help interpreting that information and accessing additional materials.
Sponsored and coordinated by STM, patientINFORM is a collaborative effort by voluntary health organizations, medical societies, health information professionals, and scholarly and medical publishers. In development since 2003, it was launched in July 2005. During 2006, other VHOs and publishers, both in the USA and internationally, will be invited to join the program.
By working with the VHOs’ patient information professionals, original research will be made accessible to patients in an appropriate context, making it easier to understand research findings. patientINFORM empowers healthcare consumers to have improved discussions with their physicians and make informed decisions about care.

HINARI
Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative
The Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) provides free or very low cost online access to more than 3000 major journals in biomedical and related social sciences to local, not-for-profit institutions in developing countries. The program was initiated by publishers in response to a request made to them by the World Health Organization in 2001 to alleviate the information needs of researchers working in the poorest counties.
HINARI enables 113 developing countries to gain access to one of the world's largest collections of biomedical and health literature. It provides not-for-profit research institutions, medical, nursing, dentistry and pharmacy schools, government health and economics ministries with free or very low cost online access to research journals, databases and other online resources.
The HINARI program was launched in 2002 by six STM member companies, Blackwell, Elsevier Science, Harcourt International STM Group, Springer Verlag, John Wiley and Wolters Kluwer International Health and Science, in partnership with the World Health Organizatiion. Since then, the programme has been joined by more than 70 international publishers, from 15 countries.

AGORA
Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture
Following the initial success of HINARI in 2002, the Food and Agriculture Organization requested that publishers of research in agriculture, fisheries, forestry and related biological, social science and economic sciences allow access to appropriate journals for researchers in the developing world. AGORA (Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture) was launched by the Director General of the FAO and the Chair of STM in Rome, October 2003.
With technical coordination provided by the Mann Library at Cornell University, AGORA provides access to agricultural researchers, educators, students and policy makers working in not for profit institutions in 69 of the poorest countries without charge. During 2006, access will be provided to a further 53 countries for a nominal fee of $1000 per annum, in line with the HINARI programme. As in HINARI, all revenues collected will be remitted by the publishers to FAO and WHO for user training and outreach activities.
