Who's Who at STM

Michael Mabe is the Chief Executive Officer of STM. He has nearly 30 years experience of scholarly and scientific publishing. After reading Chemistry at Oxford and doing research into radiocarbon dating, he joined Oxford University Press in 1980 and has since worked in various senior publishing, research and communications management roles for the British Standards Institution, Pergamon Press and Elsevier.

Michael publishes and speaks regularly on the scholarly publishing system at international conferences and is a Visiting Professor in Information Science at University College London, and at the College of Communication at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA.

Kim Beadle is PA to Michael Mabe and also runs the office based in Oxford. Kim's list of responsibilities are too many to mention but her main priority is ensuring Michael's extensive travel schedule is up-to-date and that the office is run smoothly on a day-to-day basis.

She also coordinates the STM Board meetings, Summit and Team meetings and several STM Committees as well as overseeing the coordination of conferences and seminars.

Jo Dinnage joined STM in January 2008 as Events Manager. Responsible for the organisation of all STM events including seminars, courses, conferences and outside exhibitions. She negotiates with venue's on meeting rooms, accommodation, audio visual requirements, catering, reviews contracts, budgets, liaises with guest speakers, moderators, sponsors and delegates throughout the duration from briefing stage to actual event. Jo manages the content of conference/delegate packs, assists with coordinating promotional material and provides onsite representation.
Joachim Engelland is the part time Director of Education and Training since April 2009. Joachim has spent 14 years in the publishing industry, working in industry information publishing, educational publishing and scholarly publishing. In 2001 he joined Walter de Gruyter, where he organized and managed the eJournals and eBooks business. In January 2009 he started his own business as a publishing consultant, providing services to academic publishers and institutions in the research information sector. Joachim holds a degree in theology.

Barbara Kalumenos joined STM in July 2008 as Director of Public Affairs. She holds a degree of Biology from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and has been working since 1985 in leading Sales & Marketing positions for various international companies focused on scientific information including Beilstein and Elsevier where since 2006 she was Director of External Relations for the German-speaking countries.
Janice Kuta is Director of Marketing and Membership for STM, responsible for membership recruitment and retention, member conferences, global marketing and communication including the STM News and website.

She has held a number of senior positions in the publishing industry: Executive Vice President of Macmillan Online Publishing , Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing U.S., for Palgrave Macmillan, Publisher of the American Institute of Physics Press, Executive Vice President of Blackwell Publishers in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Vice President, Publisher of Van Nostrand Reinhold, Inc. and Vice President, Director of Sales & Marketing for Springer-Verlag, New York.

Maurice Long acts as Publisher Coordinator for the Research 4 Life (HINARI, AGORA and OARE) programmes, sponsored by the WHO, FAO and the United Nations Environment Programme respectively. These programmes offer free or very low cost access to journals for researchers and clinicians in the developing world. He has been involved in the programmes since their inception. From 1982 - 2005, he worked at the British Medical Journal Publishing Group, and before that for Oxford University Press. Since 2003, he has also been involved in developing patientINFORM where publishers work with patient groups to provide access for patients and carers without charge to original papers.
Carlo Scollo Lavizzari specialises in copyright law, licensing and litigation. He is an attorney admitted to practice in Switzerland and South Africa. Carlo's law firm is based in Geneva, Switzerland. Carlo advises STM and other publishers world-wide on copyright law, policy and legal affairs, as well as some film, record and software producers. Carlo writes articles and speeks frequently about copyright and related matters. He also recently updated the "Forms and Precedents" series of Butterworths-Lexis Nexis (South Africa), "Entertainment Law" (2006) and "Computer Law" (2005).
Eefke Smit is the part-time Director of Standards and Technology and works as an independent consultant in new business development, e-publishing and web-products. Her professional background includes responsibility for the development of several successful scholarly information products, among which ScopusTM, ScirusTM and ScienceDirectTM. She has also spent many years in the print world of academic publishing in areas such as Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics. After her university studies in the mid-eighties, she started her working life as a newspaper journalist for NRC Handelsblad writing on research and high-tech developments.
 Julia Wallace is Manager, Special Projects at STM. Her current focus is on undertaking the role of Project Manager for PEER (Publishing and the Ecology of European Research), an EC supported project of which STM is the Coordinator. Having initially gained a PhD in physics, Julia has since spent over 15 years in STM publishing, working both within established publishing organisations and also as an independent consultant
